Klimabiennale Vienna, 2024

Events by ONE BODY OF WATER in cooperation with the DDSG and the Volkskundemuseum Vienna, as part of the Klimabiennale Vienna 2024.

One-hour boat trips on Vienna's Donaukanal invited to connect with water – water within us, around us, in the city, in the world. The cruises took place in the Captain's Lounge of the MS Blue Danube of the DDSG.

There were two sorts of cruises you could take: The “Be Water My Friend Cruises” with musical interventions and embodiment workshops by artists. The “Blue Gold Cruises” were a fun way to learn more about local and global water connections.

“Be Water My Friend” Cruises

Luc Kopf and Max Mutz offer a musical participatory experience on the Danube Canal with Water Karaoke. The duo has been enchanting the Viennese music scene for more than 7 years as part of the art and music collective "Journey to Tarab". Using a sampler, sets of water sounds, ambient noises, musical references and speakers are interwoven into a flowing, rhythmic mix in interaction with the participants.

The intervention by Christina Gruber and Sabina Holzer is an invitation to travel along the river with open ears and closed eyes. Listening to the river, the city and the transition zones, learning more about non-human river dwellers and their sensory perception while activating features of our bodies we still share with them, based on our watery origins). From the measuring tools of balance and orientation, we speculate with the tactile listening of the skins and the liquid visions of our eyes.

The human body consists of over 60% water - numerous fluids ensure bodily functions and information flows. "Communicating vessels" is an offer to get to the bottom of the fluids in your own body through simple physical and perceptual exercises. Fascia research and Asian martial arts are the areas of experience from which the experimental workshop draws, leading to surprising experiences on the moving floor of the ship.

“Blue Gold” Cruises

The new "Vienna Edition" of the knowledge and discussion game SHARING WATER is offered in the "Blue Gold Cruises" and can be played in groups of 6-8 participants under the guidance of a moderator. Cards provide information on local water topics and invite participants to inform themselves, discuss and contribute their own experiences and knowledge to the game. 

Focal points include Vienna's relationship with the Danube and shipping, water as a social space, urban swimming, the "invisible" waters of the city, but also the water footprint of popular Viennese products, the economy, trade and supply chains, and their impact on water budgets worldwide.
