The BLUE GOLD+ SHARING WATER project aims to offer well-founded, up-to-date and networked knowledge about water as a resource in a playful way. An analog, card-based discussion game is being developed that is thematically oriented towards Austria and the Alpine region and places this in a global context. The game is aimed at young people and adults and is published in two languages (German/English). It will be available as a free download as well as in moderated workshops in cooperation with educational institutions.
It will be implemented by Regina Hügli and Elisabeth Kopf in 2024 in collaboration with research institutions and organisations of the SHARING WATER network.
About the Game
The outlines of the game are based on the play-decide game BLUE GOLD by the "Museo A come Ambiente" (Torino, Italy) made available online 2021 by ECSITE, the European network of science centres and museums. During the SHARING WATER events 2022/23 this game was tested and offered in workshops with different age groups (teenagers, adults). The evaluation and experiences form the ground on which the new game is developed.
More Knowledge about Water
The interdisciplinary network of water experts who have contributed to the SHARING WATER events forms the knowledge-base for the information update and further development of the game. The network consists of experts from the fields of science, legislation, politics/water diplomacy, technology development, economy and art.
A special focus will be placed on current initiatives and the national legal situation on water protection/management and water management in the Alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland, as well as supranational regulations of the EU and agreements of the United Nations (SDGs).
Artistic initiatives and visionary projects will form another focus of the new edition. They make water issues socially visible and implement committed impulses for a change in the way we deal with water.
Planned Formats
Facilitation of game workshops in German and English are offered by the team of developers for educational institutions and events. In addition, BLUE GOLD+ SHARING WATER will be available in two languages as a free open source download.
For presentations, a spatial, walk-in installation is being developed that makes the interconnectedness of the relationships surrounding water as a resource interactively comprehensible. In a second step, a digital form of presentation will be developed.
Why Water?
Water is a limited resource on our planet, and it is unevenly distributed. Rising consumption, increasing pollution and the impact of climate change are making the resource increasingly scarce and sought-after. This is why water is also referred to as "blue gold".
The focus on water highlights the extent to which the most pressing challenges of our time - climate change, the loss of biodiversity and global distributional injustice - are interlinked and must be tackled as a whole.
First presentations:
The project started in March 2024. We will present our project for the first time at the European Citizen Science Conference inVienna April 2024. A first, small, edition on water in urban space will be issued for the participatory events WATER CRUISES, in the frame of Klimabiennale Vienna, May 2024.
